From Graveyard to Vineyard
If you are in India and mention "the graveyard of missionaries," most people familiar with Indian Christianity will know you are speaking of Bihar state.
But it is changing! Just as in the days of the book of Acts, whole villages are coming to Christ. New Christians are being baptized every week. Complete Hindu families, each member of their own free will, are finding freedom in knowing the "one, true, living God." Christ is making a difference in Bihar.
An Outline Bible Workshop team just returned from holding two 3-day workshops in Patna. The team was made up of volunteers:
- Myles Toews, missionary with OM Ships
- Dan Floyd, businessman
- Scotty Langford, retired Navy now free-lance missionary
- Ron Lyles, LMW Board director and businessman
- And led by Dr. John Burkett, Executive Director of LMW.
As in all workshops, the training and teaching times began with lively singing, devotional thoughts and prayer. Particpants were then taught by team members using What the Bible Says to the Minister - the Minister's Personal Handbook. Twelve chapters that help God's servants see from His Word:
- What their call must be
- What their resources are
- How to relate to others
- and 9 other subjects.
The teaching continued the second day and after lunch break a sermon was presented by Scotty Langford from the Preacher's Outline & Sermon Bible (POSB). All listened and took notes. At the conclusion of the sermon, the complete printed sermon was given to each person. An explanation of how to use the POSB followed. Then the homework assignment was given: "tomorrow, be ready to preach one of the 3 points from the sermon you just heard!"
The third day is always a great day of celebration as the anticipation of receiving the books and certificates fills the air. This was no exception. But the underlying question was, "Who will be asked to preach?" Then the time came to choose the 3 speakers. At the conclusion of the sermon using 3 speakers, participants realized what a valuable tool the POSB was. Now OUR question was, "I wonder how many will hear this same sermon preached by workshop participants in the next week? How many will come to Christ as a result of God's Word being preached using the POSB?" Only eternity will tell!
Of the 130 trained during the 2 workshops, all accepted the 10/30 Challenge. This time, in Bihar, the Challenge was different. S. D. Ponraj, Director of BORN, said, "All of us can reach 10. The real challenge is to reach 100. How many of you will try to reach 100?" They all responded with raised hands! That would mean 13,000 would be trained or taught using Outline Bible Resources!
With men and women, like the ones who attended the LMW workshops, Bihar is destined to become a true vineyard for the Father. You can help today by:
- Praying for the laborers in the fields that are "white unto harvest"
- Encouraging your church or mission group to support LMW so that more materials can be provided for those laborers
- Making a donation
- Volunteering to help in the LMW offices
Please pray for God's servants in Bihar, India today!
